Meet the Silly Squad

Silly Squad website screenshot

The Reading Agency and Kent libraries are excited to introduce the ‘Silly Squad‘.

Due to our libraries being closed, this year’s challenge will be online only.

Children aged 4 to 11 can join the ‘Silly Squad’, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh, and get stuck into all sorts of funny books!

The challenge will begin on Friday 5 June and end late September. Taking part is easy and free, visit the Silly Squad website to sign up.

The challenge is to read any books that make them laugh, smile and be happy during the summer. Whether that’s comics, joke books, poetry, fiction or nonfiction (book or eBook format).

Families are encouraged to join in and ‘get silly’. New fun and silly content is available every week including activities, games, quizzes and more.

Get involved

Sandgate’s War Memorial

Sandgate’s War Memorial at the junction of Military Road and Sandgate High Street is a Grade 2 listed structure under the ownership of Sandgate Parish Council (on a long lease from Folkestone and Hythe District Council).

The location was purchased following the end of WW1 by the British Red Cross Society and bequeathed to Sandgate Urban District Council who commissioned the memorial.

The war memorial was designed by Harry Evans of Folkestone and built by Messrs Prebble and Spain. It was unveiled on 11th May 1921 by the Countess of Rocksavage and dedicated by the Vicar of Sandgate.

Sandgate Parish Council are delighted to support the work of the Folkestone Rainbow Centre by hosting a Food Bin at Sandgate Library.

Any items that the Sandgate community collect will be received by the Rainbow Centre team at their warehouse prior to being sent out to their Distribution Centres, Foodstop and the Winter Shelter.

Help feed local people in crisis. Items we would especially appreciate this month are:

  • Longlife puddings
  • Instant Mash
  • Squash
  • Longlife Milk 1/2 litre

Please ensure all food is well within date and unopened as we are not allowed to distribute out of date food. You can drop donations to the red food bin at Sandgate Library during library opening hours. Thank you!
